Rosenborg - Besiktas (Tur) 3-0 (2-0) Lerkendal stadion Att: 14830 1-0 Erik Hoftun (22) 2-0 Roar Strand (27) 3-0 Harald Brattbakk (75) - Rosenborg now have a golden opportunity in becoming the first Norwegian side in the Champions League. They completely dominated Turkish champions Besiktas in 90 minutes, restricting the visitors to only one half decent chance at goal. Rosenborg, on the other hand, could easily have scored more than the three they got. But, hopefully those goals will be enough to take them through, even though the return leg in Istanbul will be a completely different matter. All in all, this was probably the best European Cup game played by a Norwegian club ever, and then I'm not forgetting the Lyn-Barcelona quarterfinals 25 years ago. ***** Besiktas - Rosenborg 3-1 (1-0) [agg. 3-4] Inönü stadium Att: 40000 1-0 Stefan Kuntz (9) 1-1 Harald Brattbakk (67) 2-1 Kuntz (pen. 85) 3-1 Mehmet (88) - Rosenborg did it. They became the first Norwegian club in the Champions League. However, in this game RBK started badly, and when the home side made it 1-0 after only 9 minutes, not so very pleasant memories from other RBK away games in the European Cups kept coming. The home pressure lasted for 25-30 minutes, but gradually RBK came into the game and towards half time they even managed to create a few chances themselves. In the second half the real drama started, with the French referee, Marc Batta, in one of the main roles. First, after a corner, a lob from Besiktas' Norwegian(!) international, Ronny Johnsen was saved on the goalline, at least the referee and linesman said so. However, TV replays clearly showed that the ball had crossed the line. Then, RBK countered, and Brattbakk scored the tremendous important away goal. Few minutes later, a shot from Kuntz was blocked by Strand inside the penalty area. Again the referee waved play on, but again TV replays showed that Strand used his hands, and a penalty should have been given. Still, RBK coach Eggen had the nerve to call the referee a "biased home referee" after the game. Quite the opposite was true IMHO, Marc Batta had a good game, apart from the two controversial incidents, and never fell for the enourmous pressure from the home crowd and the dives from the home players. After these events the home side gave up, and RBK could easily have taken the lead on several occations. By then, the home crowd had really turned against their own, and heavily booed several of the Besiktas players. Just as unsporting and disgusting, as when after a Besiktas injury, RBK played the ball deliberately out for a throw-in, and the Besiktas player thanked by throwing the ball back to his team-mates, which started another attack! So much for fair play, I guess... Thank God they went out, we really don't need such behaviour in the European Cups. However, in the last five minutes Besiktas managed to salvage some pride by scoring two goals which gave them the win of the night. The first on a soft penalty, the second after sloppy RBK defence play. But it was all too little, too late and when the final whistle went, Rosenborg were through to the league stage for the first time, and deservedly so.
