Sogndal were the better side before the break, and top scorer Mørkøre gave the home side an early lead. Vålerenga goal keeper Kaven had a couple of good saves as well and prevented a larger half time lead. In the second half, the visitors lifted their game, and got an important away goal with 15 minutes left. Despite strong Sogndal pressure in the last minutes, the game ended in a draw, which gives the best chances to the premier division side in the return leg in Oslo. Vålerenga - Sogndal 2-2 (1-1), agg. 3-3, Sogndal on away goals Ullevaal stadion Att: 7697 0-1 André Herfindal (13) 1-1 Kjetil Rekdal (38) 2-1 Åsmund Bjørkan (54) 2-2 Tommy Øren (86) Yellow card: Erik Hagen, Aki Rihilahti, Dag Riisnæs, Vålerenga, Rune Eckhoff, Christian Kalvenes, Sogndal. Red card: Rune Eckhoff, Sogndal. - A very dramatic end to the Norwegian domestic season, when Sogndal clinched a premier division spot at the expense of big-spending Vålerenga. In atrocious weather condtions with the rain falling from an open sky good football was difficult. Still, the match didn't lack anything when it comes to drama. Against all odds, the young first division side, with no player above 25 years, took an early lead on a rebound from the cross bar. This forced the home side to press forward, and minutes before the break veteran Rekdal scored another one of his important goals with an excellent long range shot. After the break, the favourites Vålerenga took the lead when Bjørkan scored from short range. Now, Sogndal had to press for an equalizer, and produced several half-chances in front of slippery Vålerenga goal keeper Kaven. However, with 15 minutes remaining Eckhoff received his second yellow card and was sent off. Now, all Vålerenga had to do was to hold out with one man more. But it wasn't to be because four minutes from time Øren headed in a freekick with the home defence standing still. That goal sent Sogndal to the premier division, despite enormous home pressure in the dying minutes, but somehow the ball stayed out of the visiting goal. A tremendously disappointing season for Vålerenga, which had hoped to challenge Rosenborg in a couple of years. Instead, they suddenly find themselves in the first division. But joy for Sogndal, with a bunch of very young and talented players, they can be a surprise team in 2001.
