Match report ------------ For the first time the Norwegian cup final was played between the two local rivals from Rogaland, Viking from the city of Stavanger, and Bryne from the small village just south of the city. Also, for the first time a cup final could be decided on penalities after extra time as a replay has now been abolished. However, the game never lived up to its expectations. Frankly, it was one of the most boring and uneventful cup finals in recent memory. Bryne seemed content to sit back and absorb the suspected pressure from the superior Viking side, whereas Viking seemed content to pass the ball around after their early lead when Bryne keeper Eskeland fisted a corner into his own goal. And who can blame the team from Stavanger, as Bryne failed to go forward even after going behind. The result was a game with few good chances, but Viking had the little good play there was. Especially the second goal was nice with Berre flicking Pereira's good cross into the net from close range. Left back Pereira also assisted in the first goal as he hit the corner, and he was also responsible for the third, also from a corner headed in by Finn Tihinen. In the end, a very deserved win for Viking and coach Lennartsson, who qualify for the UEFA Cup as cup winner. A welcome win for Stabæk too, as they get the last place in Europe. Bryne has to concentrate on keeping their premier division place. Just as well, as European football would have been a level too high.
